Laser Vision Correction
In recent years, laser vision correction has become an increasingly popular method for treating eye and vision errors.
South East Eye is proud to be one of the region’s leading laser vision correction providers. We use only the most advanced technology available to deliver the best corrective outcomes possible. This technology allows us to customize every procedure to fit the needs of each individual’s unique set of eyes.
South East Eye performs LASIK surgery, a form of laser vision correction that reshapes the cornea to improve refractive errors such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism.
What happens during LASIK surgery?
First, the surgeon creates a thin flap in the cornea using either a microkeratome blade or a femtosecond laser. This flap is gently lifted to expose the underlying corneal tissue. Next, an excimer laser, pre-programmed with the patient’s specific vision correction needs, is used to reshape the cornea. This precise reshaping adjusts how light enters the eye, correcting refractive errors like nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism.
Once the corneal reshaping is complete, the flap is carefully repositioned over the treated area. The natural adhesion properties over the treated area. The natural adhesion properties of the cornea help the flap stay in place, eliminating the need for stitches. The procedure typically takes only a few minutes per eye, and patients often notice improved vision within a day or two after surgery.
What happens after LASIK?
Most patients can return to work and drive within a day, though some may need extra time to recover. You’ll receive medicated eye drops and detailed aftercare instructions, such as avoiding rubbing your eyes and staying away from swimming or hot tubs for at least two weeks. Mild dryness, itching, or discomfort is common in the first few days but usually improves quickly.
Most people notice significant vision improvements within 24 hours, with gradual enhancements over the following weeks.
Is LASIK safe?
The FDA has approved LASIK as a safe and effective procedure. It is important, however, to remember that LASIK is not the right choice for everybody. Some people are not appropriate candidates, and if treated could have less than optimal results. It is important that you receive a thorough pre-operative evaluation to determine if LASIK is right for you.
How long does it take to perform LASIK surgery?
The actual procedure usually takes 10 to 15 minutes per eye. Depending on your prescription and the amount of correction needed, the laser itself only takes 20-50 seconds to correct your vision. However, you should plan on being in the office for approximately an hour-and-a-half on your day of surgery.
Are all patients who wear glasses and contacts candidates for LASEK?
Most patients who wear glasses are good candidates for LASIK. Patients with virtually every degree of nearsightedness are enjoying good outcomes with LASIK. We are able to treat mild to moderate degrees of nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. For more extreme nearsightedness and farsightedness, lens implants may be an option.
